Botswana Association of the Blind and Partially Sighted (BABPS) was established in 1999 as a not-for-profit organization with the purpose of addressing and representing the needs and interests of persons with visual impairment (VI) in Botswana; as well as dedicated to improve their quality of life through promotion of access to resources and opportunities. To achieve its mission, BABPS is running a number of programs as follows:

 

  1. Advocacy & legal aid
  2. Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
  3. Community Outreach
  4. Orientation & mobility
  5. Sexual & reproductive Health Rights; HIV & AIDS Education
  6. Monitoring & Evaluation (Baseline studies, Programmes Development and documentation).

Since inception, BABPS has played a major role in the transformation of lives of persons who are visually impaired (VI) in Botswana; regardless of limited or no resources at all. The organization has reached out to over 100 blind and visually impaired persons who have formally registered as members on the data base of the organization.

BABPS Office Secretariat is under the support of Office of the President – Disability Coordinating Office. Other than the annual grant from the Office of the President, BABPS continues to seek funding and partnerships with other stakeholders and donors to help in advancing its mission.BABPS is opened to anyone who whishes to partner and donate to the organization in an attempt to empower and improve the quality of lives of Batswana who are blind and visually impaired.  

The organization has a Board of Governors which comprises of seven members. This board takes up to 3 years and it is selected by paid up members during the General assembly.
